Primavera P6 · Power BI · Earned Value

Turn your P6 schedule into reporting that runs itself.

I help planners and project controls teams move from manual monthly reports to automated P6/XER to Power BI dashboards. Learn to build the system yourself, or have me build it for your project.

Three ways to work with me

Every service is built on the same pipeline I use on live EPC projects: XER files in, a clean Power BI model out, refreshed every reporting period without rework.

1.1 · Live cohort

Power BI for Project Controls

An 8-session live course where you build the full P6 to Power BI reporting system on a real EPC portfolio.

  • Weekend classes, about 1 hour each
  • Folder-based XER automation
  • EVM, S-curves, variance and delay drivers
  • Support during and after the course

1.2 · One-to-one

Primavera P6 coaching

Private live sessions from basics to advanced, paced to your projects and your gaps.

  • WBS, logic, calendars and resources
  • Baselines, updating and progress
  • Critical path and float analysis
  • Daily or weekly session plans

1.3 · Done for you

Custom P6/XER dashboards

I build an automated Power BI dashboard for your project or portfolio. You drop the new XER in a folder and refresh.

  • Schedule-only or cost-loaded (EVM)
  • Single project or multi-project portfolio
  • Built around your reporting format
  • Handover with a short walkthrough

What your dashboard can answer

Each page answers a question a project director asks at the monthly review. Pick the pages your project needs.

Why did the key date move?

Milestone delay drivers

Traces each milestone back through its driving predecessors to the activity that pushed it.

Where did the slip come from?

Milestone movement waterfall

Breaks period-on-period milestone movement into its contributing changes.

What changed since last update?

Schedule changes

Added, deleted and modified activities, logic and durations between two XERs.

Which paths are losing buffer?

Float erosion

Tracks total float by activity and WBS across updates before it turns critical.

Do we finish what we plan?

Planning reliability

Baseline Execution Index (BEI) and forecast hit rate by period and by contractor.

Can we trust this schedule?

Schedule health (DCMA 14)

Missing logic, leads and lags, hard constraints, high float and other DCMA checks.

How far off baseline are we?

Variance report

Baseline and period start/finish variances for every activity, sortable and filterable.

Do we have enough people?

Resource histogram

Planned, actual and remaining manpower by week and by resource.

Are we on cost and schedule?

Portfolio & EVM

PV, EV, AC, SPI, CPI and S-curves across one project or a whole portfolio.

2 days → minutes

On my own FIDIC EPC projects, each reporting cycle took about two days of manual Excel work. With this pipeline, a new update is a file drop and a refresh.

Power BI for Project Controls

Eight live sessions over 4 to 5 weeks. I build on screen, you practise as homework on the same dataset, and you leave with a working dashboard you can reuse on your own projects.

3.1Getting the data in
S1
Foundations

How P6 data is structured, what an XER holds and how Power BI reads it.

S2
Loading and shaping the XER

Parse the XER, keep the columns you need and set the right data types.

3.2Automating every update
S3
Merging and M-code functions

Turn your steps into a function and load every update from one folder.

S4
Baseline, DAX and EVM

Bring in baseline dates and budgets, then build measures, S-curves and KPIs.

3.3Reporting pages
S5
Look-ahead and status

Starting soon, finishing soon, at-risk and critical filters for the weekly meeting.

S6
Resource histogram

Planned, actual and remaining manpower from P6 resource assignments.

3.4Analysis
S7
Dashboard design and publishing

Layout, drill-downs and sharing the report with your team.

S8
Variance report and milestone delay drivers

Find out which activity moved each milestone, and by how much.

I am a planning and project controls engineer with more than five years on EPC projects, including a colocation data centre, an upstream gas gathering station and a piping and tank farm package, all delivered under FIDIC contracts.

Reporting was the bottleneck on every one of them. Each cycle meant about two days of copying P6 exports into Excel. So I built a P6 to Power BI pipeline that reads the XER files directly and refreshes the whole report in minutes.

Since 2024 I have built dashboards and delivered planning work for clients in the US, UK, Australia and the Middle East, and trained more than 100 professionals through my live course and one-to-one P6 coaching.

Common questions

Do I need to know Power BI already?

No. The course starts from how Power BI reads data. You should be comfortable with Primavera P6 basics: activities, WBS, baselines and updates.

What if I miss a live session?

Every session is recorded and shared with the batch, and you can ask questions about it in the support group.

Will the dashboard work with my company's P6 data?

Yes. It reads standard XER exports, so it works with any P6 project. If your schedule is not cost-loaded, the dashboard runs schedule-only and EVM can be added later.

How long does a custom dashboard take?

It depends on the pages you need and whether it covers one project or a portfolio. Send me a sample XER and your current report, and I will give you a scope and a timeline.

Is my project data kept confidential?

Yes. Your files are used only to build your dashboard and are not shared or reused in training material.
